A ceramic coating needs annual maintenance — not because it's failed, but because even the best coating accumulates something that regular washing can't remove. Understanding what actually happens at a maintenance service helps you see why it matters and how to decide which tier your car needs when it comes in.
This article walks through every step of our maintenance process at DRVNZ, what each tier of service addresses, and how to read the signs that tell you which one applies to your car.
Why maintenance is part of the coating, not an add-on
Think of a ceramic coating as having two layers in practice: the base coat that's bonded to your paint, and the top surface that interacts with the environment every day.
The base coat doesn't degrade quickly. A professionally applied mid-range coating will hold its bond to the paint for years. What wears is the top surface — the layer that takes the UV, the acid rain, the hard water mineral deposits from Hyderabad's monsoon, the fine contamination from construction dust and traffic. Regular washing removes loose contamination, but certain classes of contamination — iron particles from brake dust and traffic, bonded industrial fallout, mineral deposits baked on by sun — aren't removed by shampoo and a mitt.
Left to accumulate, this surface contamination does two things: it makes the coating look dull, and it gives environmental contaminants something to cling to rather than rolling off. The annual maintenance service strips that accumulated surface layer, restores the exposed coating to full performance, and applies a booster coat that reinforces the surface for another year.
The free maintenance service
Every coating done at DRVNZ includes a free maintenance service. Here's exactly what it involves:
Duration: 1–2 hours.
Step 1 — Foam wash
A full exterior foam wash removes loose surface contamination before any contact with the paint. This is the foundation for everything that follows.
Step 2 — Interior dry vacuum
The interior is vacuumed while the exterior is soaking, keeping the job efficient.
Step 3 — Clay bar treatment
A clay bar is moved across every panel of the car in a lubricated glide, physically pulling out bonded contamination — iron particles, mineral deposits, industrial fallout — that washing alone can't remove. Run your hand across a panel before and after claying and the difference is immediate: before feels slightly rough or gritty even on a "clean" car; after feels like glass. On a car that's been through a Hyderabad monsoon and six months of construction-zone parking, the clay bar turns noticeably grey. That's the contamination that was sitting on your coating surface.
Step 4 — Top coat scratch correction
A light inspection under controlled lighting identifies any surface marring or very light swirl marks that developed since the last service. Minor surface-level marks are addressed at this step.
Step 5 — Ceramic booster top coat application
An Autotriz ceramic booster is applied over the entire coated surface. This isn't a full recoat — it's a reinforcement layer that restores the top surface chemistry, replenishes the hydrophobic properties, and effectively extends the coating's service life. After the booster application, the water beading performance returns to close to its original condition.
Available add-ons at the maintenance visit:
- Windshield coat restorer — ₹1,500
- Alloy coat restorer — ₹1,500
- Plastic restorer — ₹2,500
The paid maintenance tiers
The free service covers a car in good condition — one that's been washed regularly, hasn't accumulated heavy contamination, and has no significant swirl marks or surface degradation. Some cars need more.
1-step maintenance process
When it's needed: Cars with light swirl marks, moderate road tar accumulation, or gloss that's noticeably below original condition. Cars that see daily highway driving or high-dust environments often fall into this tier.
Labour cost: ₹3,000–₹5,000. No product cost.
Duration: 4–5 hours.
What happens: Everything in the free maintenance service, plus a one-step machine polish before the booster coat is applied. The one-step polish removes the light swirls and surface marks, restores the paint's optical clarity, and gives the booster coat a properly prepared surface to bond to.
3-step maintenance process
When it's needed: Cars with heavier swirl marks, moderate scratches, road tar in significant quantity, or paint that's noticeably dull and flat even after washing. Cars that haven't had a maintenance service in 2+ years, or those that have been through automatic brush washes regularly, often need this tier.
Labour cost: ₹4,500–₹8,000. No product cost.
Duration: 8–10 hours.
What happens: Full multi-step paint correction — compound, cut, and polish — before the booster coat is applied. The result is paint that looks corrected to near-original condition, with the booster coat applied over a fully prepared surface.
Full recoat
When it's needed: After the coating's warranty period has expired, or when inspection shows the base coat has degraded to the point where a booster can no longer extend its performance meaningfully.
Cost: ₹14,000–₹20,000 including product and labour.
Duration: 2 days.
What happens: Everything from scratch — full foam wash, interior vacuum, clay bar treatment, complete multi-step paint correction, and a full Autotriz all-surface recoat. You get the full benefits of a fresh ceramic coating at roughly half the cost of the original service, because the paint is in far better condition than a car coming in for its first coating.
How to know which tier you need
You don't need to diagnose this yourself. When you bring the car in, the inspection tells us what the surface actually needs. That said, here are the indicators that tell you roughly where you are:
Likely free service: Water still beads reasonably well. Car looks good in normal daylight. No visible swirl marks. Washing feels easy and contamination comes off without much effort.
Likely 1-step: Water beading has noticeably slowed. Light swirl marks visible under direct sunlight or parking lot lighting. The gloss looks a little flat compared to when the coating was new.
Likely 3-step: Swirl marks visible in normal daylight. Paint looks dull even after a fresh wash. The car hasn't had a maintenance service in over 18 months.
Likely full recoat: The coating's warranty period has ended. Water no longer beads — it spreads and sits. Paint looks significantly faded or flat.
Timing: when to book
The annual maintenance service should be booked within 30 days before the anniversary of your last service to keep the warranty valid. The most practical approach: add a calendar reminder for 11 months after your service date. That gives you a month of flexibility to find a slot.
If you've missed the anniversary window or inherited a coated car without service records, come in for an inspection anyway. We can assess the coating's current condition and recommend the right starting point regardless of service history.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often does ceramic coating need a maintenance service?
Once a year, ideally within 30 days before the anniversary of your last service. The annual service includes clay bar decontamination and a ceramic booster coat that restores hydrophobic performance and extends the coating's effective life. Skipping annual maintenance accelerates coating degradation and can void your warranty.
What is a ceramic booster coat?
A ceramic booster is a maintenance-grade coating applied over the existing base coat during the annual service. It doesn't replace the base coat — it reinforces the top surface layer, restoring the hydrophobic and anti-contamination properties that have partially degraded from environmental exposure over the year.
How much does a ceramic coating maintenance service cost in Hyderabad?
The free maintenance service is included with every DRVNZ coating. Paid maintenance starts at ₹3,000–₹5,000 for a 1-step polish and booster, ₹4,500–₹8,000 for full paint correction plus booster, and ₹14,000–₹20,000 for a full recoat. Which tier your car needs depends on the coating's current condition, assessed at inspection.
Can I get a maintenance service if I didn't get my coating done at DRVNZ?
Yes. We inspect the car first to understand the coating's current condition and history, then recommend the appropriate service. The process is the same — we're working with the coating that's on the car, regardless of where it was originally applied.
